Vocation and Formation

A Journey of Faith, Service, and Commitment

The path to religious life with the Daughters of Mary – St. Joseph's Province is a deeply spiritual and personal journey. Our formation program is designed to nurture and guide women who feel called to consecrated life, helping them grow in faith, community, and service.

1. Come and See

Duration: 1 to 3 months

This is the initial stage of discernment, where new candidates are welcomed into our community. They live with the sisters and participate in daily prayer, community life, and apostolic activities. This period allows the young women to experience the joy of religious life firsthand.

Additional Info: Candidates with SSLC will pursue Plus Two studies after aspirancy.

2. Aspirancy

Duration: 1 year or alongside Plus Two studies

A time of spiritual awakening and vocational discernment, Aspirancy helps the candidate grow in prayer and community life. It includes spiritual reading, guidance, and an introduction to religious values.

Focus areas:
  • Understanding community life
  • Personal and spiritual growth
  • Evaluation of motivation, character, and aptitude for religious life

3. Postulancy

Duration: 8 months

The postulancy is a deeper exploration of the nature of religious life, its obligations, and the charism of the Congregation. It focuses on the postulant's total development—spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and social.

Training includes:
  • Community life
  • Prayer and interior development
  • Understanding the mission and vision of the Congregation

Guidance: Formation is guided by the Postulant Mistress.

4. Regency

During the Regency, postulants actively participate in the apostolic mission of the Congregation. They live in our convents and work alongside professed sisters, gaining real-world experience of religious service.

Focus:
  • Apostolic involvement
  • Community life in practice
  • Strengthening vocational commitment

5. Novitiate

The Novitiate is the core period of formation, focusing on deep spiritual growth and preparation for vows. It is also a canonical requirement.

Training includes:
  • Interior life and spiritual direction
  • History, spirituality, and charism of the Congregation
  • Study of the Constitutions and Rules
  • Preparation for apostolic works

Guidance: Guided by the Novice Mistress.

Goal: To discern and respond more fully to God's call

6. Temporary Profession (Juniorate)

Duration: 6 to 9 years (temporary vows)

After completing the novitiate, the sister makes Temporary Vows and begins the Juniorate—a time of living the vows in practical life.

Focus:
  • Spiritual and doctrinal formation
  • Professional studies
  • Apostolic ministry
  • Common Juniorate program for one year before Final Profession

7. Final Profession & Ongoing Formation

After careful discernment and preparation, the sister makes her Final Profession, committing her life to God and the service of others in the Congregation. Formation does not end here. Ongoing formation is essential for the continued growth of the religious, spiritually and apostolically.

It includes:
  • Continuous prayer and renewal
  • Lifelong learning
  • Deepening commitment to the charism and mission

The call of God and His consecration continue through a lifetime, culminating in eternal union with Him.

How to Discern a Vocation
